Simple Strategies to be Intentional with your Time Online

I love teaching about time management strategies because as entrepreneurs we have to be really intentional with how we spend and divide our time, otherwise the day ends up owning us as opposed to us owning our day. I'm a PRODUCTIVE person, and I emphasize PRODUCTIVE because there's a big difference between productive and busy!

I can attribute my productivity to being very intentional with my time, especially in the online space where time can get away from you so easily!

As you may have experienced, it's so easy to go online and get sucked into the scrolling trap, looking at pictures and updates, liking and commenting on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, or whatever your preferred platform is. So, how do you really get intentional with your time so that you don’t end up losing 2 hours of your day to scrolling?

Putting simple structures in place such as turning off your notifications on your phone is really helpful. Eliminate the distraction in the first place. I’m guilty of not doing this. And what happens? I hear that little “ding”. Next thing you know, I grab my phone to look at that notification that just came in…then I look at the next one….then the next one….then before I know it, 30 minutes goes by, all because of that “ding”. Put the phone in another room if you can’t resist. Or, you can put it on Do Not Disturb if you don’t think you’ll be tempted to pick it up.

Another thing you can do is to set a timer once you get online. I like to do this because I can get really focused when I dive into my work and not even notice that an hour has gone by. The timer will let you know when the time is up. Make the decision to stop what you’re doing when the time is up. Don’t just hit reset or snooze to give you more time.

If you're not sure of how you're spending your time online there are several apps that you can use to help eliminate distractions and schedule focused time. Check out this link: https://wethegeek.com/best-apps-to-track-limit-social-media-usage/. This page provides you with a variety of apps that you can use to track and limit your social media usage. I always suggest that when you’re doing your research to determine which app best suits your needs, do a comparison. You want to ensure that you're using an app that serves your needs, as they all have similar and different functions and purposes. My favourite tool that I use to compare apps is the website getapp.com. For the purpose of keeping time, I just prefer to use the time on my phone. However, depending on your goals and social media strategy, you may want or need to measure/track how much time you’re spending on each platform. Many of these apps will do this for you.
